Apple Finally Allows Face ID With Masks in iOS 15.4 Beta - ExtremeTech
Back in 2017 when Apple launched the all-new iPhone X, it was heralded as a brave step forward for the company. It was the first of a new generation of devices that ditched the home button in favor of Face ID, letting people unlock their phones with a glance. Apple had done its homework. Despite peoples' reservations about the replacing a reliable button with something new and unknown, people agreed the new technology was faster, easier, and it "just worked." Then the pandemic arrived in 2020, and suddenly a lot of people, your humble author included, wished we could go back to having a home button, or some sort of in-display fingerprint sensor, since Face ID wasn't designed to be compatible with a face mask.
Apple TV 4K (2021) review: This is an uncompromising streaming box
When considering the Apple TV 4K, you have to admire Apple's tenacity. Despite overwhelming evidence that most people prefer sub-$50 streaming dongles--or whatever software is built into their smart TVs--Apple is still sticking it out with a $179 streaming box. The company deigns not to sully its living-room experience with anything less than the fastest processors, the finest build materials, and the most bells and whistles--including the ability to operate as a HomeKit smart home hub and as a Thread border router. This review, however, will focus on the device's media-streaming prowess. The result is admittedly exquisite.

Make it easy to see, touch and voice control your iPhone: How to make your phone accessible
I have a friend who is 75-years old and has Parkinson's disease. He's also crazy about his iPhone and tech in general, and eager to buy the latest and greatest gadgets to hit the market. More importantly, his smartphone is his lifeline to the outside world. He uses it for watching and reading news – one of his favorite pastimes – and for keeping up with the world around him. He also goes straight to his smartphone to order food delivery, use car services like Lyft and Uber, and contact people in emergencies.

Apple's 2021 iPhone could feature Touch ID after face masks 'ruin' Face ID
While face masks were once rare sightings, they're now compulsory in a range of settings across the UK. The face coverings play a key role in stopping the spread of Covid-19, yet many iPhone users have been frustrated that their masks have prevented them from unlocking their iPhones using Apple's facial recognition technology, Face ID. Now, a report indicates that Apple could be bringing back its Touch ID technology in its 2021 iPhone, in the form of an in-screen fingerprint reader, to help users unlock their smartphones without having to remove their masks. Rather than being a replacement for Face ID, Touch ID would be an additional method of unlocking the iPhone, according to the report. Many iPhone users have been frustrated that their masks have prevented them from unlocking their iPhone using Apple's facial recognition technology, Face ID (stock image) The report, by Bloomberg, indicates that changes to this year's iPhone will be minor.

Tech trick
At dinner, I mentioned that I would like to go hiking in Patagonia. I never searched for these trips or anything like it. Yet, an hour later, I started getting ads on my phone about hiking adventures in Patagonia. While there's been no concrete evidence that your device's microphone is always listening, many Americans believe apps and sites routinely collect their voice data and use it for marketing purposes. Your smart speaker with its virtual assistant is always listening.
Swapping streaming remotes for fewer cord-cutting annoyances
It's all too easy to overlook the quality of the remote control when picking a streaming device, as I've written before. You might not realize it from the price tag, for instance, but the $180 Apple TV 4K has one of the worst remotes on the market. The slim design too easily slips between couch cushions, and its trackpad-based controls have a steep learning curve. Conversely, the $29 Roku Express seems like a great value until you realize that its remote lacks basic TV controls. What's a cord-cutter to do, then? If you're stuck with a bad remote, consider a third-party replacement instead of buying an entirely new streaming device.

The iPhone SE 2 may be the iPhone 9 we really want
There's a reason people have been eagerly awaiting the iPhone SE 2: to herald in a new era of the best iOS and iPhone functionality at a low cost. But folks also appreciated the original iPhone SE's home button, and with it, Touch ID. The upcoming'New Spring iPhone 2020' – presumed to be the iPhone SE 2 – will retain the home button, according to noted leaker Evan Blass, and we have little reason to doubt it. But would Apple let one of its brand-new handsets have a low-tech authentication method, given how much it's invested in facial recognition with Face ID? Absent Blass' intel and solid track record, we'd be skeptical. True, Apple still produces the home button-packing iPhone 8, but that handset debuted in 2017, and it's now sold as a budget model.

2020 iPhone might have Touch ID inside the screen
If you've been holding off on getting a new iPhone because Touch ID is gone, you might only have to wait another year. According to Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly testing iPhone prototypes with a new version of its Touch ID fingerprint sensor that's embedded in the display instead of inside a physical home button. The new in-display Touch ID would let "a user scan their fingerprint on a large portion of the display, and it would work in tandem with the existing Face ID system." SEE ALSO: What to expect from Apple's'iPhone 11' event on Sept. 10 The report corroborates an investor note by TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said last month that Apple was planning to resurrect the fingerprint sensor for iPhones slated for 2021. Bloomberg's report, however, suggests Apple could be readying the new Touch ID for iPhones for 2020 -- a year earlier if testing is successful. Apple replaced Touch ID with Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017, and the latest iPhones -- the iPhone XS and iPhone XR -- don't have a fingerprint sensor, either.
